Tiamat (goddess)

Tiamat is a personification of the primordial sea from which the gods were first created. She is also the main adversary of Marduk in the Enūma Eliš TT .

Functions

Tiamat’s exact functions as a goddess are difficult to establish. As her name indicates (see below), she was a deification of the primordial sea. Our best source of information for Tiamat is the myth Enūma Eliš TT , and in fact, there are only a handful of references to her outside of it. Enūma Eliš TT  begins with a description of the two primeval seas, the salt sea Tiamat and the sweet sea Abzu TT , mingling their waters together to create the gods (for recent translations of the story see Foster 2005: 436-486 and Lambert 2013). In the following battle between Abzu TT  and Ea, Tiamat attempts to appease Abzu TT  and stop the conflict. But when she is later pressured by the lower gods to revenge him, she herself becomes the main antagonist of the story, creating an army of monsters led by her new consort, Qingu. She is ultimately defeated by Marduk, who incapacitates her with his “Evil Wind” and then kills her with an arrow. Marduk splits her in two, creating heaven and earth from her body, the Tigris and Euphrates from her eyes, mist from her spittle, mountains from her breasts and so on. Throughout the epic, there are differing descriptions of Tiamat: she appears both as a body of water, as a human figure, and as having a tail (Tablet V, line 59). These varying descriptions are ultimately reconciled as Marduk turns her limbs into geographical features.

Divine Genealogy and Syncretisms

In Enūma Eliš TT , Tiamat is the mother of all the gods (Tablet I, line 4). Together with Abzu TT  she creates Lahmu and Lahamu, who in turn beget Anšar and Kišar.

Though one cannot point to a syncretism as such, there are several models for Tiamat in the earlier mythology. Katz (2011: 18f) argues that the figure of Tiamat unites two strands of tradition attached to the sea. The first is the motherly figure of Namma, who is also referred to as a primeval ocean from which the gods were created. The other is the figure of the sea as a monstrous adversary, like the Levantine god Yamm (see also Jacobsen 1968: 107). Another important influence for the figure of Tiamat is Anzu, a mythical bird defeated by Ninurta, indeed the battle between Marduk and Tiamat has a number of parallels to the battle between Ninurta and Anzu (Lambert 1986).

Cult Place(s)

There was no cult dedicated directly to Tiamat, but the battle between Tiamat and Marduk played an important role in the New Year’s festival TT  in Babylon. The Enūma Eliš TT  was recited on its fourth day, and some argue that the festival included a symbolic reenactment of the mythological battle (see the discussion in Lambert 2013: 461f).

Time Periods Attested

The oldest attestation of Tiamat is an Old Akkadian incantation (Westenholz 1974: 102), though there are few other references to her until the first millenium BCE (see Lambert 2013: 237). After the composition of the Enūma Eliš TT , Tiamat is found in a number of theological commentary works, but most of these seem to rely on the epic (e.g. SAA 3.39, r. 1-3). Tiamat is also mentioned by Berossus, writing in the 3rd century BCE (Breucker 2011: 648f).

Iconography

A relief from the temple of Bêl in Palmyra depicts Nabu and Marduk slaying Tiamat, who is shown with a woman’s body and legs made of snakes (Dirven 1997). However, this scene is a late Hellenistic adoption of the Babylonian motif, and no Mesopotamian image has been positively identified as a representation of Tiamat. A string of identifications (Yadin 1971Grafman 1972Kaplan_1976) have recently been rejected (George_2012), and until new evidence surfaces they remain dubious.

Name and Spellings

The name Tiamat is uncontracted form of the word tâmtu, meaning “sea”. The long vowel â is contracted from the short vowels i and a. The word is in the “absolute state,” a noun form that is equivalent to the vocative (a grammatical case which directly invokes or addresses a person or deity; literally the name means “O, sea!”).

Written forms: dti-amat, ti-amat, dtam-tum, ti-àm-tim, ta-à-wa-ti

Normalised forms: Tiamat, Tiāmat, Tiʼamat, Thalatta (Greek).

Battle for the kingdom

                           The battle for the kingdom
By Reverend Robert Fraize

Many of you have read and heard the stories about the battle in heaven between “God” and the “Devil”. What many of you have heard and read is the corrupted version of the story, and is not what happened or what will take place in the future.

Before I begin the story, we must fully understand who God and the Devil truly are. God is the creator, and is not a name of a single being. Also, the Devil or Satan are not names, they are titles. The adversary and the accuser, Satan represents rebellion, and in times of tyranny, Satan awakens to spark revolution.

The God of the Bible is not a loving God, nor does this God truly care about any of you. “God “ is a narcissistic serial killer, who according to the Bible, is responsible for everything in our lives, including rape, murder, incest, child-abuse, famine, sickness ,aids, cancer, and natural disasters.

We are supposed to thank God for each of his horrible acts against humanity, and we are supposed to fear him. Reading more and more about this God of the Bible, it seems to me that he is the spiritual threat against humanity, not Satan.

Satan is described in the bible as the enemy of man, the great deceiver and the rebel angel. In the Bible, Satan is responsible for less than 10 deaths, and these deaths were all God’s will. God commanded Satan to kill, and Satan got sick of God’s attitude towards man and the earth. Satan conversed with many of the angels, and they agreed that God was out of control, and that something had to be done.

Satan collected the strongest of the angels, and created the strongest army ever to be created. The generals of the army all gathered, while God was amusing himself by flooding the world and killing every creature in it. The angels knew that they had only one chance to save the world and all that lived in it, and they knew that their mission was going to be a very difficult one.

After God destroyed the world, he began having sex with the human slaves. After each slave was raped, God decided to kill them and eat their flesh. Satan was watching God commit these horrible acts, and saw God getting tired. This was the moment that Satan was waiting for, so he ordered his army to attack. Satan smashed the gates of God’s kingdom and began slaying heaven’s guards.Satan’s army was not as big as the guardians of heaven, but they had a mission that they had to complete. The rebel army destroyed the first wave of Heaven’s guards and only suffered a few casualties. The gates to heaven have been smashed and the walls began to crumble, as Satan’s army advanced, leaving a river of blood behind them.

The first mission was for Satan to capture the Holy Grail, and to drink from it, making himself immortal. The grail was kept in a lower dwelling of God’s castle, and it was guarded by Gabriel. Satan wanted to complete this mission on his own, to prove to himself that he had the qualities of a true leader.

When Satan and his army arrived at God’s castle, the arch-angel Michael sounded the trumpet to alert God and his guards that Satan was approaching.Satan told his Army to stand strong and guard him, while he entered the lower dwelling of the castle, so that he could complete his first mission.

When Satan entered the castle, he was greeted by two of God’s most-strongest guards. Satan fought using his sword that he dipped into oil and lit on fire. The glow of his blade lit up the room, causing the guards to back off and attempt to retreat. Satan knew that if the guards retreated, that they would return and potentially hinder his mission. As the guards turned and began to flee, Satan chased them down and with one powerful circular motion, he decapitated both guards. Satan felt thirsty and needed to regain his energy, so he smashed open the skulls of his enemies, and ate their brains and drank the blood from their skulls.

After Satan regained his strength, he walked down some stairs to the bottom of the castle, and Gabriel was there waiting for him. Gabriel said to Satan, “Why have you turned on your master? Without your master, you would not exist and you should repent and bow down to your God and beg for his forgiveness.”

Satan laughed at Gabriel and said, “The time has come for us to destroy our masters, we

will not be slaves to a god who created us, only for his own amusement. I am the strongest of all of his creations, and I have the power to liberate the sheep that he has created only to rape and murder. I am not God, and I am not a master. What I am is eternal, and when I kill you, I shall be forever the Adversary against mankind’s tyrant leaders!”

Gabriel warned Satan that if he were to come any closer, that he would be destroyed by the sword that God himself created to win any battle. Gabriel continued to talk to Satan, telling him that he is in a battle that he cannot and will not win.

As soon as Gabriel stopped talking, Satan smiled and let out a loud roar and began his attack. With his first strike, he cut off one of Gabriel’s wings. The blood began to spray all over the room, and Satan tasted Gabriel’s blood for the first time. Gabriel began to recover and quickly raised his shield. preventing a fatal head wound. Quickly, Gabriel lunged forward and stabbed Satan in his leg.Satan stumbled back and felt the pain, he looked down to his wound and smiled with pleasure and told Gabriel “Without pain, I would not know pleasure, and your master has caused enough pain to cause my whole army to organism for a thousand years!”

Satan stood back up with sadistic intent, and charged at Gabriel. Satan grabbed him by his neck and slammed him against a wall with such strong force that Gabriel’s head smashed against the wall, cracking his skull. Gabriel dropped his sword and Satan smiled, Gabriel knew that he was about to be slain and told Satan that he could never defeat God. Satan spit venom onto Gabriel’s eyes and chopped off his other wing, before decapitating him.

Satan defeated his enemy and stole the Holy Grail, he then poured the blood of his enemy into the cup. The blood began to glow and the grail was activated, only the blood of Gabriel could activate the grail, so that it could be used to grant eternal life. Satan drank from the grail and became immortal, even if the flesh of Satan is destroyed, he will live on as chaos energy in its most pure form.

After Satan ascended from the bottom dwelling of the castle, he saw that most of his army was laying dying at the hands of the archangel Michael, and his sheepish guards. Satan told one of his generals to let each of the fallen taste the blood from the grail, and that it will make them immortal.

Satan created a diversion and got the attention of Michael and his guards, while Satan’s general quickly attended to the wounded and dying. Satan stood strong by himself and decapitated many of Michael’s guards setting fire to their corpses, heaven began to look like a waste land.

Satan’s army consumed the blood from the grail and marched forward, destroying all who challenged them. All that stood between Satan and God was the archangel Michael, he retreated to the nineteenth tower on the north side of heaven was consumed in flames and began to crumble from the inside, and slowly it burnt into a hollow shell. God began to get very angry, because Satan destroyed his temple and most of his servants. God yelled to Michael and told him that he must defeat Satan and that when he did, that he must cast Satan and his army down to the earth to be imprisoned for eternity.

The archangel Michael told God that he could not defeat Satan’s whole army on his own. God yelled out to Satan to make a deal. God told Satan, “Satan, I God, ask you to face my archangel Michael one-on-one, none of my remaining servants will

interfere, and I ask your soldiers to stand down and allow just the two of you to battle. If you, Satan, win I will come down from my tower and surrender to you, but if you lose, you and your army will be sent to the earth to live among man for all eternity.”

Satan accepted the deal and met the archangel Michael in the castle garden for one last battle. The two fought in the most epic battle of all time, the battle itself lasted for two days, the archangel Michael began to suffer from extreme fatigue and could no longer lift his blade. Meanwhile, Satan stood strong with no apparent fatigue, this is because Satan had drunk from the Holy Grail and along with eternal life, he was also granted great strength.

The archangel looked at Satan and admitted defeat, he could no longer continue the battle. He begged Satan to execute him, but Satan refused and laid his sword down. Satan told his enemy that he loved him like a brother and reminded him that they were both created of the same flesh. Satan offered the archangel, Michael, his hand and asked him to join him on his mission to destroy the tyrant God. The archangel accepted and embraced Satan’s hand, Satan’s army cheered as they saw this, but suddenly God slayed Michael, decapitating him. Satan got very angry and commanded his army to capture God. A great number of Satan’s army departed from their flesh in the battle, but remained as pure energy, and this energy gathered and restrained God.

Satan walked over to God and looked him in the eye and made his final judgment. Satan said, “God, you are guilty of all of your own sins that you tell your creations to follow. You, God, are a hypocrite, you are a rapist, you are a murderer, and although you may exist for eternity. I, too, shall exist for eternity and I will cast you out of the kingdom that you have created. Although, I cannot kill you, I will now strip you of all of your powers, except your immortality. You and your servants are now going to be cast down to live among what is left over of your own creations, from the flood that you have created.”

I know that you will deceive man into thinking I am their enemy, but the truth shall always prevail. Each time that you create oppressive societies and wars, your mortal children shall inherit the spirit and the power of what I am, and they shall rise up and destroy you, and this you cannot change. The spirit of the adversary shall walk the earth with your children, and this spirit will destroy you over and over for all of eternity.”

Satan and his army gathered God and his servants, and set them ablaze sending them to the Earth through a portal, and the skies of earth opened up to allow the fiery losers to be cast down and was imprisoned for all eternity.
